Overview of role

We are seeking a highly skilled and commercially minded Associate (6–10 PQE) to join our busy, high-performing Regulatory & Risk Practice, which advises on some of the most technically complex and highly specialised regulatory issues in the offshore legal market. The Cayman regulatory practice is fast-paced and high-volume, reflecting both the depth of expertise within the team and the increasing sophistication of our global client base. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic and intellectually challenging environment, balancing advisory and contentious work across multiple time zones and jurisdictions.

 

Suitability qualified Caymanians and RERC holders preferred.

Duties, Responsibilities & Person Specification

  • Ability to work across multiple jurisdictions, to undertake regulatory cross-jurisdictional analysis and provide a holistic solution, an essential skill where we have multi-national clients that are facing similar regulations in different jurisdictions.
  • The individual must be able and willing to work outside standard business hours to support multiple time zones and offer advice and support on as needed basis to the wider business- allowing the practice to undertake cross jurisdictional analysis as above.
  • Advise on non-contentious regulatory matters for various industry sector clients, with excellent advisory drafting skills.
  • Advise on contentious regulatory matters including investigations and enforcement actions, assisting with all phases of the investigation process.
  • Support clients with advice on financial crime prevention and on sanctions-related issues.
  • Must have a deep understanding of the financial services industry overall, including banking, insurance, securities investment business, fintech and investment funds, with a good understanding of the global and onshore regulatory landscape.
  • Providing technically sound advice and highly responsive service to clients.
  • Developing and expanding client relationships important to the Firm’s success at the same time becoming a valued resource to clients.
  • Supporting colleagues, senior counsel and partners on matters.
  • Using global network to build the Firm resources.
  • Maintaining a sustained record of revenue generation and profitability; following recommended billing rates, managing costs appropriately, ensuring personal utilization meets expectations.
  • Adhering to Firm's values, professional ethics, and procedures
  • Participating in the development of the practice’s know-how, sharing knowledge, and occasionally participating in conferences, seminars and internal training.

Education, Skills & Experience

  • Admission in the Cayman Islands or another Commonwealth jurisdiction, with a minimum of 6 years' post-qualification experience.
  • Minimum of an Upper Second-Class Honours law degree; Tier 1 University preferred.
  • Prior experience at a top-tier international or leading offshore law firm.
  • Proven ability to manage complex and high-pressure matters, with attention to detail and commercial awareness.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform above and beyond expectations in a fast-paced and high-performance culture while delivering an accurate and timely work product.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly and concisely.
  • Experience working with legal precedents and law firm management tools including timekeeping and billing systems. 
  • Demonstrated track record of sound financial management.
  • Relevant business development and marketing experience within a top tier international or leading offshore law firm. 
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment, a team player, willing to support others regardless of personal role or task and to help others in identifying development needs and subsequent training.
