Overview of role
The Paralegal researches law, investigates facts, time recording, prepares invoices, and prepares documents to assist Lawyers by performing the following duties:
Duties, Responsibilities & Person Specification
- Research and analyse law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, legal codes and laws
- Prepares legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, affidavits, appeals, research memoranda, for review, approval, and use by attorney
- Investigates facts and law of case to determine causes of action and to prepare case accordingly
- Files pleadings with the Supreme Court Registry and Court of Appeal
- Review first drafts of legal documents and alert Lawyer to pertinent issues arising
- Prepare hearing bundles for use in interlocutory application, hearings of petitions, trial and appeal
- Implement and maintain the Lawyer's billing and collections system, including drafting initial quotations and fee estimates
- Maintain accurate records and correspondence files in relation to the Lawyer's client files
- Maintain personal knowledge and expertise on the legislative and specialist aspects relevant to the job, to undertake personal training and development activities as required, and to pass on new knowledge and information effectively to colleagues
- Liaise with clients as appropriate and in accordance with Lawyer's instructions
- To carry out any other duties commensurate with the purpose of the job, including the performance of duties outside normal working hours
- Participate in special projects as and when required and train/supervise junior paralegals, pupils or contracted staff where appropriate
Education, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree and paralegal qualification with a minimum of five years of experience within a similar role
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Communicate clearly and effectively legal matters both verbally and in writing, with people at all levels of understanding. This will include high quality correspondence
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to use legal precedents and billing systems
- Work independently and as a team member
- Knowledge of relevant Bermuda legislation would be an asset
